は and が Particles

は・が

は marks the topic (what you're talking about), while が marks the subject (who/what does the action). This is one of the trickiest distinctions in Japanese!

Topic は

As for [topic]...

は sets up what you're talking about

私わたしは日本人にほんじんです。

Subject が

[subject] does/is...

が emphasizes WHO or WHAT

誰だれが来きましたか。

田中たなかさんが来きました。

が with adjectives of feeling/ability

Use が when expressing likes, wants, or abilities

私わたしは寿司すしが好すきです。
