XはYです

The most fundamental Japanese sentence pattern. Use this to identify things, describe what something is, or introduce yourself.

X is Y

Formation: [Noun X] は [Noun Y] です

This is the basic 'A is B' sentence structure

私わたしは学生がくせいです。

これは本ほんです。

X is not Y

Formation: [Noun X] は [Noun Y] じゃないです

じゃないです is casual negative, じゃありません is more formal

私わたしは先生せんせいじゃないです。
